Chapter Five

Jasmine slowly rose out of bed around 10 am. She had slept bad, but not because of noise and traffic, but because she had been plagued with dreams about Barry and mostly Beau. How could she let two guys get to her so bad?
She stumbled out of bed and went to the kitchen to get a drink of water. She ate cereal, then she brushed her teeth, showered, and got dressed.
She spent the day searching for jobs. By the time she got home that evening she was wore out. It had been a long day. She took a taxi for jobs farther away, but tried to walk when she could. She really didn’t have the money to use the taxis’. She was hoping someone would hire her close to her apartment.

She had not been home for about 15 minutes before her cell phone rang. Again, a number came up, but not a name. She recognized the number from yesterday and knew it was Beau. She didn’t want to answer the phone. She was afraid of what Beau would say.
Finally, she answered just so she could tell Beau that she now had a boyfriend. She didn’t really have a boyfriend, but she did like Barry and she was wanting to get to know him better.
     “Hello,” she said.
“Hello,” she heard the smooth voice of Beau. “I’ve missed you. Are you coming out tonight?”
“I don’t think so,” she said.
“Why not?” he asked, with a hint of irritation.
“Because,  look I have to tell you something. I hate to do this on the phone, but I met someone I really like and I just want to get to know him,” she said, gently.
“I see. You could get to know me just as well. You might even like me better,” he said.

Jasmine paced around the room as she spoke. Her voice was harsh, “Well, I heard you are a player and I am not into those kind of games.”
“Where did you hear that? Look I know I like a good time who doesn’t, but I really do feel something with you. It is hard to explain. I feel very drawn to you. I know you can feel it too. It’s like the universe is drawing us towards each other. It’s almost like an electricity between us. Tell me you can feel it too?” he said, almost pleading with her.
Yes, Jasmine did feel it too. It was a strange feeling, like she was meant to meet him and be near him. But with the thought of him being a player it made her think twice about him. As long as she stayed away from him, she wouldn’t fall for him.
Suddenly, a knock sounded at her door, she turned towards the door, and said on the phone, “Someone is here, I have to go, bye,” and she hung up.
A knock sounded again and she called, “Come in.”

Barry walked in, smiling at her and said, “Hello. I thought I would stop by. Is this a bad time?”
“No, come in. I was getting ready to fix dinner. Do you want some?”
“I didn’t come to eat. I don’t want to impose on you,” he replied.
“It’s no big deal. I would rather eat with someone,” she said, and gave him a quick hug.
“I just wanted to come by and see how you were. I can’t stay to long I have to go to work soon,” Barry said.
“Well, you could have called,” Jasmine said, as she opened the refrigerator and got out the lettuce, carrots, radishes, onions, celery, and salad dressing.
“No, I just wanted to check on you,” he said, as he looked around the apartment.
Jasmine put the food on the counter, and started chopping it up. She looked at Barry as he looked around her place.
“What are you doing?” she asked, curiously.
Barry looked at her and smiled, “Nothing, just seeing if anyone else was here.”

He sat down on her couch and started watching TV.
“What do you mean?” she asked.
“I …. I didn’t know if Mick would be here. He wasn’t home all day today.  I…didn’t know if he stopped by here,” Barry said. His back to her the whole time he talked.
“No, he never stopped by,” Jasmine said, curious about the way Barry was acting.
Jasmine finished chopping the vegetables and wondered at Barry’s strange behavior. She was a little worried now. Was he the jealous type? And if he was how jealous was he? Was he so jealous of his friend? She had only talked to Mick once. Mick apparently had a very busy life. Did Barry not trust Mick or her? She really didn’t know Barry very well. Maybe, she was moving way to fast with him.

Barry knew he had come into her house searching, and he shouldn’t have let Jasmine see him do that. But he wanted to know if someone had been in her apartment after he left last night. He knew it would be risky, but it was important for him to know.
“You know I love being around you,” he said, turning in his seat and smiling at her.
Jasmine was mixing the salad up in a bowl. She smiled at him. Maybe, they was moving way to fast.
     “What’s wrong?” Barry asked.
“I…I mean don’t get me wrong, I love being around you too, but maybe we are going to fast,” she said.
“I don’t think that. Look we are just getting to know each other whether we are friends or could be more. I hope we can be more, but we just really have to see how it turns out,” he said.
     “I agree,” Jasmine said.

Jasmine finished with the salad and set the table. She sat down and looked at him and said, “It’s ready.”
Barry looked at his watch and said, “Oh no, I got to go.”
He turned off the TV and stood up. He walked over to her chair and bent to give her a quick hug.
He stood up and said, “ I got to go to work. Sorry I can’t stay. I’ll see you later, bye.” He kissed her forehead then walked out.
Jasmine felt a little taken a back by the whole ordeal. Barry had acted strange when he came in, then they only talked for maybe 15 to 20 minutes, then he just left quickly.
What just happen? Jasmine thought to herself. What was that all about? And why was he looking all around my apartment?

Jasmine only ate half of her salad, then cleaned up.
She felt dumbfounded by Barry. What was he really after? His actions were so strange.
Maybe, I don’t need to rush into anything, she thought, I think I need some time out and by myself. I’m sick of dealing with Beau and Barry, I just need some me time.
She did the dishes then got ready for the night.

She got dressed in a purple, low cut, sleeveless silk shirt, and black mini skirt, and black high heels. She did up her make up and put in big gold hoops earrings. She looked in the mirror and thought, I look good.
She checked her answering machine. She knew no one had called, but she just felt the need to check anyway.
Still no call backs from any jobs. Jasmine knew she still had some money put back, but if she didn’t get a job within the next month, then she might be hurting.
Hopefully, tonight some guy might buy her a drink, if not she would order the cheapest thing they had.

She decided to go bar hopping. She came to the first bar and talked to the bouncer for a little while.
He said the place was pretty dead. Not many people came out any more. In fact, he was surprise to see such a beautiful girl like her out this late by herself.
She thanked him and went into the bar. She hang out for almost two hours and no one came in. Finally, she gave up and went on to the next bar.

She arrived at the next bar, well it said lounge, but did it really matter.
Just as she arrived, her cell phone went off. She looked at it, and it was Beau’s number.
Great, she thought. Never a moments peace.
She ignored the call and walked into the building. It had two entrances, and she chose the one on the left.

Inside she found a woman bouncer standing by the door. She talked to her for awhile.
The woman said it was kind of dead. There was only a few people upstairs.
That’s fine, Jasmine had said, and started to walk upstairs.
“Wait,” the woman said, “You know you really shouldn’t be out after sunset by yourself. You might want to invite someone out with you.”
“It’s fine. I’ve been out by myself several times. It is alri……”
Suddenly, Jasmine cell phone rang again. She looked down at it, and it was Beau again.
“It might be someone you need,” the woman said, smiling.
Wow, what a coincidence, Jasmine thought. She held the phone in her hand letting it ring several times, trying to debate on whether to answer it or not.
“Aren’t you going to get that?” asked the woman. “It could be someone important.”
Jasmine was starting to say something when the phone quit ringing.
“Must have gone to voice mail,” Jasmine replied, then quickly disappeared through the door.

She walked up several flights of stairs wondering why the place didn’t have an elevator. She finally reached the top and found the place to be empty beside the bar tender.
He greeted her and seemed happy to have someone to talk to.
She ordered a glass of wine, and asked where everyone else was. He told her that it was lively earlier, but now it was pretty dark out and not many people wondered out after dark. Especially, women by themselves.
Jasmine was starting to get annoyed by that comment.
He pointed at the wall behind her, and said, “There is another bar over there. It’s bigger and might have more people in it.”
“Thanks,” Jasmine said, getting up and walking to the wall. “Where’s the door?”
“Oh, you have to go back downstairs and across to the other entrance,” he replied.
“Great,” Jasmine said, sourly. She finished her drink and headed back down.

She went to the other entrance and rode the elevator up, thankful she didn’t have to climb anymore stairs.
She walked out of the elevator and talked to the bouncer for a few minutes. This bouncer said there were people inside just not to many.
Jasmine went inside and looked around. This “Lounge” was bigger, and had a lot more stuff to do. She ordered another drink and wondered into the dance room.
There were a few people dancing and a few talking.
She talked to a few people and had a few more drinks.
Finally, the bar tender came around and told everyone they were getting ready to close. It was almost 4 am.
Jasmine wondered back down. She almost stumbled coming out of the elevator. A few people in the elevator with her laughed and suddenly Jasmine’s good mood felt a little down. She was embarrassed and felt a little dizzy. She had to admit she had more to drink tonight then she had in her whole life. Considering she never really drink before.

She wondered onto the street outside of the lounge, and looked around.
The other people on the elevator walked together down the street leaving her alone.
It was very late and she felt a little woozy. She realized that in that moment she shouldn’t have had as many drinks as she did. Since there was a killer on the loose.
Suddenly, her phone rang and she saw it was Beau again. She answered it this time, because she was annoyed at him for calling so much and for being embarrassed on the elevator.

“What?” she hissed into the phone.
“That’s not very nice,” Beau replied.
“I don’t care. You have been calling me all night, what do you want?” she asked.
“I would like for you to come over,” he said. His voice soothing into her ears.
Jasmine walked a few steps and felt dizzy. Maybe, I need to sit down, she thought.
“I’ll send a cab to come and get you,” he said.
    “Fine,” she said, harshly.
“See you soon,” he said, then hung up.

She was sitting on the curb when the cab pulled up. She got in and wondered how Beau knew where she was since she didn’t tell him on the phone.
Well, it didn’t matter, she was going to give him an ear full when she saw him.
The cab pulled up to a building and the driver turned around to her and said, “Don’t worry about the money. I’ve already been paid. Also, you are suppose to go up to the top floor.”
Jasmine got out of the cab slowly. Her head was spinning slightly and she wished she had just told the cab driver to take her home. But she was already here.
She walked into the lobby and found it to be very nice. She stood in the lobby for awhile, when her phone rang again.
“Hello,” she said this time with less malice.
“Are you coming up?” Beau asked.
“Yeah,” she said, then hang up and entered into the elevator. She pushed the button for the top floor.

Jasmine came into a little hallway, and notice there was only one door to this floor, which meant that Beau must have the pent house suite.
She hesitated for a moment before she knocked on the door.
Beau answered the door and had her come into the foyer.
“I don’t know why I am here,” she said, shaking her head, then wishing she hadn’t. She felt a little dizzy, and slightly lost her balance.
Beau grabbed her by her elbows and steady her.
“Are you alright? How much did you drink tonight?” he asked, looking into her crystal blue eyes.
Jasmine looked up into his eyes and was annoyed that she couldn’t make out the color.
“It is none of your business,” she hissed loudly.
“Please, keep it down. I have roommates,” he said, looking to his left at the doors.
“Roommates?” she asked, looking in the same direction. “How many? Who are they?”

Beau smiled at her, and asked slyly, “Why are you jealous?”
“No,” Jasmine hissed. “Why would I care?”
“I guess you shouldn’t,” Beau snickered.
“That’s not nice of you,” Jasmine said, turning her head from him.
Beau raised his hand and placed it on her cheek, he slid his fingers down her jaw and to her chin, rising it up so she could look at him.
“You know it is so odd that I am so drawn to you. It feels like a pulling. When I am near you, I just want to keep you by my side forever,” he said. His voice was gentle. It was smooth, and soothing. Not quite a whisper, but so gentle and caring.
Jasmine leaned towards him. Her lips slightly parted only inches from his, when suddenly she jerked herself back a few steps.
Beau looked down at her. He smiled at her and started to lean towards her.

“What are you doing?” she hissed. “You think you are just so wonderful, but you are not.”
Beau smirked again. “You’re scared,” he said. “When there is nothing to be scared of. I know you can feel it, because it is such a strong feeling in me.”
The truth was Jasmine could feel it. It was hard to describe. It was like an electricity between them, a pulling of their forces, their energies longing for each other and trying desperately to touch.

“I see it in your eyes,” he said.
“Yeah, well I can’t make out your eyes,” she hissed.
“That’s because you have had to much to drink,” he replied, smiling.
“No it’s not. I didn’t have hardly anything to drink the other night, and I couldn’t make out your eyes then. What is it with you?” she said, curious and scared.
She didn’t want to admit it, but he did scare her. It wasn’t normal for her not to be able to see his features clearly. Was it a mind trick? And if so how was he doing it and why?
Plus, what about these feeling she was having for him. She literally wanted to touch him, be near him, not let him out of her sight.
Plus, this electricity she was feeling in her soul for him, it was like a longing for him, like she had been searching for him her whole life and now she had found him.

She looked deep into his eyes and yet still they were blurry with like a fog over them.
She shook her head. “This was a mistake to come here,” she said.
“No, it wasn’t,” Beau insisted. “It makes perfect sense. You are special and so I am. We are feeling something towards each other for a reason. I don’t know why, but it is happening and I don’t think we can ignore it.”
Jasmine stepped back a few more steps. “No, it’s not true. I don’t know what kind of mind games you are playing, but I want no part of them,” she cried, then ran out of his apartment and to the elevator.
“Wait,” she heard him say as he ran out into the hallway, as the elevator door open.
She hurried into the elevator and he rushed up to her.
“Don’t leave,” he said, pleading with her. His voice was full of sorrow. “Don’t leave me.”
She pushed him backwards as the door to the elevator closed.
Beau stumbled backwards to the wall, then gained his footing and rushed up to the elevator as the door closed. “Nooo,” he cried out.

As soon as the elevator hit the bottom floor, she ran out of it, and down the street. She ran to the nearest subway, and used it. It was morning now and a lot of people were out, busy going to work. They stared at her. She was dressed for the night life, and here it was 6:30 in the morning.
Jasmine now wished she hadn’t worn a shirt that was so revealing. What was she thinking? Back in her home town of Pleasant View she would have never worn clothes like this. Not ever a low cut shirt that revealed her cleavage.
One woman beside her leaned over to the woman next to her and started whispering.
Jasmine could only imagine what they were saying.
A few men across from her were staring at her with a longing and smirks upon their faces that made Jasmine wished she had a sweater to cover up with.

The subway had an outlet next to her apartment building. She was so happy to get off of the subway and to her home.
She ran all the way into her building and when Ralph Moss, the desk clerk, looked up at her to say hello, she barely said hi.
All she wanted to do was go upstairs to her apartment and forget this night ever happen.

As the elevator door closed she heard Ralph call to her. “I told you not to stay out pass sunset.”
Jasmine cringed as she heard his words. She leaned against the far side of the elevator as she rode it up to her apartment.
Her head was spinning, but not just from the drinks she had, but from the whole conversation she had with Beau.
Was he trying to tell her it was destiny for them to be together? How was that so? She didn’t believe in destiny or fate. Life just happen whether one liked it or not. She had the meanest parents in the world, how could that have been destiny or fate for her to have them?
Her whole life was based on just being; nothing great, or magical, or destine, or fated to it. It was just life.
And now Beau was telling her they are meant to be together.

Jasmine entered her apartment. She got ready for bed, then checked her answering machine. Nothing, no messages.
Great, she thought, another day without a job.
She went to her bedroom. She felt wore out and quickly found herself dreaming.
Beau was in her dreams. Smiling and trying to convince her that they were meant to be together. In her dreams she was peaceful as he gathered her into his arms.
She stared into his eyes, but only saw a fog across them. It bothered her, then she looked passed him and her lips parted in a silent scream.
Behind him was a wasteland of death and decay. It was a small town, not unlike the one she was from, and it was burning. People were screaming and running into the streets. Crying and yelling for help.
     Jasmine woke up screaming.
She later fell back to sleep, but it took her a long time for her to do so.
And Beau was waiting for her when she did.
